A Plea from our Intake Coordinator
DRoH is in a quandary because adoptions have slowed to a crawl... and so have donations. But there is no shortage of dumped dogs. Historically the month of May is when a huge number of Dachshunds get dumped at shelters. ("Why worry about the dog? We have vacation plans and can just get a new one in September!") We have a record number of dogs in our system. We turned down 10 dogs yesterday, and 5 more today, due to lack of funds and foster homes. If the time is right for you to adopt, HURRAH! Find out how to Adopt! If you can help us out by fostering, THANK YOU! Find out how to Foster! If you cannot foster or adopt, please consider donating to help with the vet bills. We are desperate to help the ones with no hope, and I am the one who has to look into their sweet eyes and say "No room at the Inn" Saving one dog may not change the world, but the world will surely change for that one dog! |

Our Adoption Fee for Seniors (10 and older) is only $150. Learn more about the benefits of adopting an older dog. ![]() Violette Many times people are afraid to adopt an older dog - not because they don't like them, or are afraid of any extra care or money that might be needed - but because of how soon they might lose them. But death is a part of life. Imagine giving a senior dog a loving, secure, and happy retirement home for whatever time he has left. His life, and yours, will be richer for it. G. Hewett: I've adopted "seniors" and they are perfect, particularly for senior humans. They are calm, quiet, loving companions who don't require the activity that younger babies do. They are perfectly content relaxing and being quiet with you. They would be good with younger people who lead a more sedate lifestyle, too. Those of us who are older have no business adopting young animals who need a lot of activity to release all their youthful energy. We no longer have it in us to keep them happy. C. D'Arcy: As the owner of 3 Dachshunds, one which will turn 8 this wk, let me say...you would not know he is that old.... he is just so much fun! he was 4 when i got him...never been an inside dog..or even a "pet".... used for breeding only....he was so easy to train & is strictly an inside pet now! go adopt a senior! J. Bugel: My 16 year old dachshund, who I've had since he was a puppy, is AWESOME! He may be hard of hearing and almost fully blind, but he still runs like new. The best part of owning a senior is that they are not interested in toys or barking at squirrels. All they want is to snooze next to you while you watch TV, or lay down in your lap while you're on the computer. I would definately encourage everyone to ADOPT A SENIOR... You won't regret it!!! |
