Kirby

Emma

|
Christmas came early for Kirby and Emma this year! They got beautiful new harnesses and leashes in Christmas fabrics. They get to look cute and Christmas-y, and, thanks to Judy, DROH gets the proceeds from the sale of the items.
Emma, our little diva brought to us by DROH in 2005, enjoys showing off new outfits and having a fuss made over her. Kirby, our macho boy, thinks that's all girl stuff, but he'll go along if treats are involved.

One happy family!

|
Nicholaus has his very own boy and a great new family. He's learned to sleep under the covers in mom and dad's bed. What a life!
Christmas Update:
Nicholaus (Nick) has become very spoiled. He sleeps with Colin. After he and Gretchen eat their breakfast and go outside they run to the side of our bed and we let them lay with us for a while. He loves to play with Gretchen, go for walks, chase our cat and play with Colin. He is a ball of energy but as soon as he sees someone with a blanket he wants to snuggle. We love him so much and are so glad he's a part of our family.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
Terri and Fred

Cozy!
|
Update on the kids - Andy is in the dark blue sweater, Scout is in light blue. Andy loves getting dressed up, but Scout is an escape artist - he wiggles out of his sweaters and doesn't leave them on very long.
Blessings,
B.J.

Joey wonders where the "Doxie Guard Dog" sign is...

Bill & Ted's Relaxing Adventure

Can you tell we get along?

More than the Brady's!
|
Of the many DROH fosters we have had the privilege of helping, Joey, Bill and Ted were the three we just could not let go.
Joey came to DROH from Harris County Animal Control - death row; he had 3 days left before he was to be euthanized. Joey had been picked up as a stray. He was scared, confused, terribly thin, had horrible teeth (needed a dental and one tooth was cracked), and was heartworm positive.
Bill and Ted came to DROH as 6-week-old puppies. They were turned into a shelter together by the same person, perhaps a backyard breeder. They had "skin problems." The shelter planned to euthanize them due to their "skin problems." Fortunately DROH was called, the boys were placed in a foster home, given 7 days worth of antibiotics and recovered quickly from their "skin problems."
Because of the dedication of DROH volunteers, Joey, Bill and Ted, and others like them, have been given a second chance to become much loved pets and family members.
The last picture is of Bill, Ted, Joey, and several other fosters - at that point we had a full house!

| Sunny Jo, Shera Sue & Lucy |

In Shera's bed...

...on Mom's lap...

...or on Dad's lap...all good options!
|
Since Shera's parathyroid surgery she has been much more active. She still doesn't have hair on her back and she can't see very well (light and shadow) but she's a contented little girl just the same. She is not the least bit shy about making her wishes know, and her bark is LOUD for such a little thing! Shera, of course, was our failure number 1 at fostering.
Sunny was failure number 2 at fostering. She was quite traumatized when she came to us. She had evidently been abused by a man because it took her more than 6 months to warm up to dad. Now she's beside herself with excitement when he comes home, and she demands her tummy rub before anything else happens.
Lucy is our only "planned" child. She's still as happy go lucky and easy going as ever!
The first photo is Sunny Jo and Shera Sue "sharing" a bed. This is Shera's bed and by golly, she'll get into it one way or another! Note Shera's "muscle shirt". She wears that in cool weather to make up for the lack of hair. Mom can't complain about Shera not having hair - Dad's the same way!
The second photo is Sunny and Shera on mom's lap (are you beginning to see a pattern here?). As you can see, each girl will claim her spot and she doesn't particularly care if a sister is there or not!
The third photo is Lucy and Shera on dad's lap with sister Agnes. Agnes is the only one we have that is not a DROH dog. She turned 15 this past summer, and arthritis is beginning to bother her in the hind legs, but she still does pretty well.
All the girls usually end up under the covers with us before the night is over.
Take care!

With Mommy

Snoozing

Going for a ride!
|
I have been in my "forever home" exactly a month, and I couldn't be happier! My mommy and daddy love me so much! I love going out to the dog park, and I love meeting new people (not to mention other dogs). I also love my treats, my toys, taking long walks in the neighborhood, and car rides! But what I love most is snuggling up to my mommy and daddy and settling in for a long nap!

Sittin' on the dock...
|
Gina (in the middle) and I are getting along great. This weekend we went down to Bayou Vista to meet my boyfriend and his dog BeBe (chocolate lab on the right) and his new puppy Suzie Q (part German Shepherd rescued from the local vet office, on the left). Everyone played well together.
Thank you for allowing me to adopt Gina.

Sooooo happy!

Hanging out on the sofa
|
Dear DROH,
I just wanted to write you and tell you how much I love my forever home and my forever Mommy and Daddy! They love me so much and tell me all the time that I was very smart to find them. I haven't changed much from my DROH foster days. I'm still really sweet and I love to snuggle and act silly. Oh, and I give my Mommy and Daddy lots of kisses on the face now. I used to be too shy, but I've come out of my shell a lot.
Here are some of my favorite things:
- Going on walks in our neighborhood
- Trying to chase birds, cats and squirrels (I am a huntress!)
- Going to the pet store
- Lounging in the sun
- Making funny facial expressions (my eyebrows wiggle up and down lot)
- Hanging out in my little bed or on top of the sofa
- Getting my head and belly rubbed
- Being playful and silly in the morning
- Eating doggy treats
- Greeting people when they come in the door, since they are all here to see me
- Going to my best friend Abby's house (she's a big dog!) and going in and out of the doggy door to the big back yard
- Getting lots and lots of attention wherever I go
- Napping with Mommy and Daddy in the big bed
Here are some of my not-so-favorite things, but it's OK, I guess:
- Getting baths and haircuts
- When Mommy and Daddy pay attention to other dogs or babies, even though I know they love me best
- When little kids come up to me and pet me a little too much; I am really patient with them, though, because I know they're just excited to see me
Overall, I am having the time of my life and I make my Mommy and Daddy sooooo happy. Thank you, DROH, for taking such good care of me before I found my forever home!
Love,
Millie Campbell

Hangin' with her brother

|
Here are pictures of Nelly (formerly Slinky), who was adopted back in May. She is doing great, everyone adores her, and she plays well with her new brother Nello. Continuing her vacuum-like eating behavior from her foster family, Nelly sneaks food out of Nello's dish every chance she gets!

Peek-a-boo!
|
I have been with my new mom for almost a year now! Time really flies when you are having fun. I'm a very busy man. I'm on constant patrol for cats, squirrels, and I love to chase lizards. I love to go for walks everyday (we go at least 4 times a day), and I know all the dogs in the neighborhood. I especially love the big dogs, because I think I am just as big as they are! I love to go to the dog park, and play with the big and little dogs, I seem to make friends where ever I go. I have been on three airplane trips to go up to Oklahoma to see my grandma and my canine cousin Maggie (she's a basset hound). I ride under the seat in front of my mom. I just go right to sleep in my carrier, and I wake up and we are in Oklahoma. People in the airport and the plane are all so happy to see me (even the security people), it makes me think I am a celebrity or something. I say my prayers every night and am so thankful that all of you at the Dachshund Rescue of Houston saved me, and helped me find my mom. She says I am the light of her life, and I think she's pretty special too.

Annie and the fish

|
We are doing great and just loving Annie. She is such a joy in our lives. We did take her for her yearly check up and shots and really like the vet. Annie just loves the back yard. We have our pool cleaner that she loves to play with when it sprays water out of the pool, and of course chasing squirrels. Annie may have to learn Spanish, for John is looking at a job promotion and us moving to Mexico.
We will keep in touch.

| Gracie & Little Bit |

Pet therapy group
|
Both Gracie (black & tan) and Little Bit (red) were Doxie Rescues and have been in the Pet Therapy program for about 2 years. They went through the 6 week training course to test their patience and personalities for geriatric visits. They earned their badges and proudly wear them to "therapy" once a month. As you can see in the picture, they have various size colleagues and the residents especially like the smaller dogs to visit in their beds. In a way, it seems like the doxies like to spread their good fortune for the cushy lives they now have.

Taking it easy

|
Since it has been nearly a year since we adopted Harry (a.k.a., Longfellow), I just thought I would show you what a beautiful little dog he has become. He is also a joy to have in our lives. He gets along well with the other 3 dogs just fine and thinks he is king around here. He is so sweet. We can't imagine our lives without him now.
Sincerely,
Helen

Good friends

|
I wanted to let you know that it will be a year on 4/30 that we have had Samantha in our family. We thought it was appropriate as we reflect on this past year that we say "thank you" for giving Samantha to us. It seems impossible to believe that she has only been with us for a year. She is such a part of the family that everyone thinks she has been with us for a long, long time. She is so much fun and she makes us laugh all the time. Emmie (the beagle) has really learned so much from Samantha and we can tell she is a much happier dog now that she has a friend.

Wiener Dog racer
|
Little Emma participated in the Buda Wiener Dog Races on April 30. What a little athlete...can you believe she came to DROH with a broken pelvis? Though she didn't win, I think the whole event was a boost to her self-confidence and good socialization. She really seemed to enjoy herself. The attached photo shows her and her Dad after her race.
I wore my "I'm A Lifesaver" t-shirt and got several compliments on it.

Sammy

Roxie (l) and Sammy (r) guarding the backyard |
Hi! My name is Sammy. I'm the reason Mom got involved with Dachshund Rescue. I was a long time foster before she saw me and thought I was the most beautiful color she had ever seen. Once she was approved to adopt me, I got to meet her and (now sister) Roxie. It wasn't exactly love at first sight for Roxie; she was used to being an only dog and wasn't too sure about sharing Mom. Lucky for me, Mom is the boss so she makes the rules and I got to stay. That was almost two years ago! Mom says I've gone from being a quiet little guy to very outspoken. I also like toys but I like squeaky ones. Unfortunately they don't stay squeaky very long. Either I squeak the squeak right out of them or my brother Andy rips the toy open to find out what is making the squeak. In any case, we have very quiet toys around here now unless Mom buys new ones. I also like food. All I ever get is two meals and two or three or maybe four treats a day. Look at my picture! See how I am nothing but skin and bones?? How am I supposed to defend the house if I don't have any energy? I just don't know what to do... :-)
Check out Roxie and me. We are observing the backyard, making sure everything is in place and there are no interlopers. You can read more about me and my sibling dachsies at http://dashiesrule.blogspot.com.

Making the request

Resting
|
Moxie & Mason did their part to raise funds for DROH recently. While Moxie started a paper route, Mason attached the first photo to an email to all his friends: "Mason hopes this is a pleading enough face... Moxie is considering a paper route to raise money and so is out of the house right now... Normally I would never send an email like this but this is a worthy cause I’m concerned about. If you are considering charitable donations, I’m asking you consider the Dachshund Rescue group we came from. They are overwhelmed with doxies and are working hard to get them adopted, but this is way more than they’ve been handling. Anything you can do is greatly appreciated. If you do so, mention it’s in the name of Moxie and Mason adopted 4/2005. Thank you for considering this!"
After the emergency funds were raised, they attached the second photo to a "thank you" email: "Moxie and Mason can rest now that Dachshund Rescue raised the emergency money. Moxie is giving up her paper route; that dragging papers with your teeth up to each door is a pain!"

Astros fan |
Today is Happy's 3 year anniversary in her "forever home." She is extremely "Happy" that her forever Mom and Dad are Astros fans! She is all ready for the new season with her jersey, neck scarf and ball. Her favorite player? "Mo" as in more treats, more food, more belly rubs, more smoochies and Morgan Ensberg. She is a sweet and loving addition to the Richard Pack!

 Graduation Day!!! |
Thought you might like to see a picture of our 3 boys graduating from "Good Pets" class! That's Newman first, Ollie in the middle, and Stanny on the end. They made us very proud and were the stars of the class, if I say so myself! The boys are all doing well and we are a happy group here!

Flyball dog coming through! |
This is Riley (formerly Rodney) running flyball, a dog sport into which he followed big sister Casey. They are members of the Hot Rod Hounds flyball club. He really loves to go over the jumps and get his ball! Riley just made his racing debut and earned his Flyball Dog title the weekend of April 8-9, and he hopes someday to achieve the Flyball Master Excellent title like Casey. You can see him in his Houston debut at the Reliant Park World Series of Dog Shows, July 21-23. In his spare time Riley enjoys playing tug, fetch, and chasing and being chased by Casey and his other sister (and fellow DRoH rescue) Snickers.

| Tater Tot |
Tinkerbell gladly shares her dog bed with her little brother |
Here’s Tater Tot (formerly Keiko adopted from DRoH in December 2004) sharing the bed with his doxie sister, Tinkerbell. When Tater Tot came to DRoH, he was emaciated, heartworm positive and covered with scars. After an X-ray to determine the cause of a bad cough, we also learned he had three pellets lodged in his shoulder and back. At a consultation with the pet psychic, we were advised he was shot because he was always getting into trash looking for food. Now he spends his days searching for cozy spots to take a nap. We are grateful to DRoH for saving dogs like Tater Tot.

| Rusty |
 He thinks about it...
 ...takes a tentative lick...
...what you gonna do about it?
 That made me tired!
|
Rusty arrived on 11/21/03 as our first foster doxie. He was the smallest Doxie in the pack at about 13 pounds. His foster brother and sister weighed in between 25 to 30 lbs. This didn't stop Rusty from making himself "known" and "at home"! He became our adopted "Rusty Bucket" on 9/3/04 and is just a ball of energy and love in his forever home.
