Rainbow Bridge

Adopted Dog Memorial

If tears could build a stairway, and memories were a lane,
I would walk right up to Heaven to bring you home again.
No farewell's were spoken, no time for goodbye,
You were gone before I knew it, and only God knows why.
My heart still aches in sadness, and secret tears will flow,
What is meant to me to lose you, No one will ever know.

Angel Fond Memories

Vienna

Adopted 06/10/04
Deceased 01/13/12

Vienna was our resident couch potato, and she loved being tucked in. She'd hop up on her sleeping pillow and wait for you to cover her with her blanket and tuck it in around her. She also loved to sun bathe. We know she's enjoying plenty of blankets and sunshine on the other side of the bridge. We love you and miss you, Vienna.

Sleepy
"Snickers, Snickerdoodle"

Adopted 07/25/03
Deceased 01/08/12

Jake #3

Adopted 11/02/08
Deceased 12/23/11

Jake was a sweet boy true to his bio on the Dachshund Rescue Site. We thought through adopting Jake we could make a difference in his life BUT on the contrary Jake made a BIG difference in all our lives! We really enjoyed him and will deeply miss him! Jake was such a good buddy to our Precious and kept her company when she was sick. We all miss Jake so much, especially Precious. I will remember them running around and kissing each other –they were a sight to see.

Dear Jake (Our sweet little boy),

“We Love You and Miss You dearly! You brought Us so much Love.”

Richard, Hope and Precious

Caroline

Adopted 11/20/11
Deceased 12/20/11

Caroline got to spend only one short month with her adoptive family. She was being treated for heartworms, and sadly, was not able to recover. Sweet Caroline is greatly missed by her foster mom and her adopters.

Sadie #3
"Sadie Sue"

Adopted 10/12/08
Deceased 10/07/11

With great sadness and a heavy heart, I report that my Sadie Sue, who I adopted from DROH, has crossed the Rainbow Bridge tonight. She was protecting her family by killing a coral snake in our backyard. Unfortunately, it bit her.

There is such a void in our home now. I am heart broken and sad beyond what words can say. Who will take naps on the sofa with me now? The picture with her nose peeking out from the blanket is her trademark. Whenever I couldn’t find her in the house, I would check the throw on the sofa.

DROH is the best thing that ever came in to my life. You gave me such a wonderful gift when you rescued my Sadie Sue.

Chipotle

Adopted 11/19/09
Deceased 08/03/11

Chipotle (aka, Chip, Chippy, Bip, Bippy, Bippy-Chip/Chippy-Bip) was a good little boy who loved to snuggle and tear up his "woobies." He was a fierce watchdog and great companion to his pack: Maxie, Jeffy and Joe (human), all of whom miss him very much. Dad held him while he was put gently to sleep following a brave but unsuccessful battle with disc disease.

Tori

Adopted 08/27/05
Deceased 07/30/11

We miss Tori terribly. She was a most precious girl, a little lady in every way. She never complained and was the only dachshund I know who sat so patiently while I trimmed her nails and brushed her teeth. She developed colitis in December so her already restricted diet became even more so. In the last 4 months it was discovered that she had an enlarged heart and pulmonary hypertension. She was being treated and was taking 10 different medications. She was always compliant, (it helped that the pills were disguised in peanut butter). Through it all, Tori was a loyal companion, always by our side and always happiest to see our 4 1/2 year old grandson. Tori passed on July 30, 2011

Shasta

Adopted 10/21/10
Deceased 05/18/11

Sweet Shasta was hit by a car and, sadly, did not recover from his injuries. We will miss you, little guy.

Moxie

Adopted 04/16/05
Deceased 05/09/11

Anyone who knew Moxie knew her spunky personality, energy, and quest to lick the end of the nose of every human on earth. Moxie was an accurate name. All that personality and energy couldn't save her from failing kidneys that ended up making her life so miserable I had to put her to sleep. The entire vet clinic staff was crying and said they hadn't had a dog's passing hit them so hard in many years. That was the hardest thing I can remember having to do. I shall miss her terribly while being grateful for the short time we had together.

Guinness
"Gunney"

Adopted 09/26/09
Deceased 04/16/11

Gunney was the sweetest little soul. He had a wonderful personality, always happy and made his family laugh every day. He was his dad's best friend, the two were inseparable like two peas in a pod. He will be greatly missed by his family and his canine sister Mona. Rest in peace G-man.

Cole

Adopted 03/01/08
Deceased 03/28/11

From his adopter, Maurgan:

Cole was put to sleep this morning due to complications (mylomalacia) related to his IVDD. I was with him at the time and he did not suffer, although his last few days were tough. He did his best to put up one heck of a fight. He will be greatly missed and we really enjoyed our three short years him.

Oscar

Adopted 02/06/06
Deceased 03/18/11

I am attaching a picture of Oscar from the hallowiener party.... he went as a pirate as you can see from the picture. I adopted Oscar because no one else wanted him. He was blind in one eye and afraid of smoke for some reason. Every time I would turn on the oven he would run, hide and shake something horrible must have happened to him when he was young. He also had a tattoo on the inside of his leg, no one ever could tell me what it meant.

The past few years he suffered from terrible skin allergies and I tried every treatment possible. Finally his skin got so bad with the constant chewing and itching the vet said it was best to put him out of his misery. He wasn't the cutest or best behaved dachshund but he was loved and he will be missed by both of his brothers Chili and Frankie. He will also be missed terribly by me and my husband.

He was truly loved the last years of his life and I hope it made up for all the bad years he had gone through before he came to live with me. I know he is waiting at the Rainbow Bridge

Contessa
"Tessa"

Adopted 08/06/06
Deceased 03/14/11

Contessa unfortunately is no longer with us...she expired at 3pm today. She was the best dog and a friend that anyone could have. She will be missed by everyone that ever had a chance of knowing her. May she have peace and her spirit live at the Rainbow Bridge.

PawPaw

Adopted 06/12/09
Deceased 03/08/11

From his adopters, Alina and Carolyn:

We wanted to tell the story of our beloved Paw Paw. Paw Paw was a senior found by Dachshund Rescue of Houston in November of 2008 and was in foster care at Tom's house. We as pet sitters were only supposed to be pet sitting Paw Paw, but we ended up actually adopting him in June of 2009. Anyone who crossed his path would have no trouble understanding why.

Paw Paw had the most loving, gentle and wonderful personality. He fell totally, deeply and unconditionally in love with Alina. You could see it in his face when he saw her. He felt the same about Tom as well. Tom loved him too and if he told the truth, I know he was just a little sad to see him come and live with us full time. We always told Tom that he had ‘visitation rights’ and could visit as often as he liked. We would take Paw Paw with us to the dog shows where ‘Daddy Tom’ would be participating in Fly Ball so he and Paw Paw could have a visit. You could tell that both Tom and Paw Paw were thankful for their time together.

At home Paw Paw would follow Alina around the house with loving eyes and what a lick machine! He would lick and lick and lick you. We had a nick-name for him. We called him ‘Parpie’ most of the time and that made him happy. My favorite times with him were watching TV in the living room. He would come up on the couch next to me and get as close as he could and sleep so soundly. He was one of our pack from the very beginning and got along so well with all of his brothers and sisters. He had little sounds that he would make when he wanted to be picked up and loved on and his collar made a special sound and we always knew it was Parpie coming down the hall to find us. At night he had a special bench and bed he enjoyed starting the night on but like clock-work during night, he would get up to get a drink of water and go to Alina’s bed and make his wonderful little noises so she could pick him up and put him under the covers right up against her. (He had the most wonderful feet.)

Last week Thursday we discovered that Paw Paw had some fever and was beginning to lose his appetite. After several vet visits including an emergency early Sunday morning visit and two nights in the hospital, our dear, sweet Parpie crossed the bridge and is now waiting for us on the other side. We don’t have a clue of what his life was like before Dachshund Rescue or even his exact age, but we know that his remaining years at Daddy Tom’s house and our house showed him what a warm loving environment was like. It will take a long, long time to be able to look at his favorite places around our home and not feel a deep sadness and loss. We are ever so grateful to Dachshund Rescue for the work they do in giving these; especially elderly, wonderful dogs a second chance in life to feel the love and warmth they deserve. Our special thanks go out to Dr. Gina Varns and everyone at Manvel Animal Clinic for all of the love and attention they gave to Paw Paw.

We truly cherish the time we had with Paw Paw. It was short but we are thankful. The kind of love he gave to us was just as important if not more as he received from us.

We love you, Paw Paw.

Reagan
"Dew Little"

Adopted 12/25/04
Deceased 12/01/10

From Kevin, Reagan's adopter (12/2/10): "Dew Little" (Reagan) passed away yesterday morning of congestive heart failure. He started panting heavy about 3am and died about 30 minutes later in my arms. He was diagnosed with a heart mummer class 2 in 2008. He went every year for check ups and they even did elderly blood work in July. They also did an ultrasound and all signs were he was healthy. This was probably the hardest thing I have had to go through but I must tell you I am so glad I was there and know he died as peacefully as possible. He was wagging his little tail up until last few minutes. It would have been 7 years this Christmas you brought him to me for our trial visit. We had a great time together and he was truly loved. He never forgot and was the best little friend! I remember when you came to visit about 6 months after he was with me and he remembered you and did his little wine... a noise he made when he was really happy! Anyway, just wanted to let you know. Thanks for hooking me up with him. He was very very special!

Lucy

Adopted 04/02/05
Deceased 11/15/10

Lucy passed away in November while under vet's care.

Hans
"Chocolate"

Adopted 01/06/09
Deceased 10/21/10

Hans was so sweet, his foster mom adopted him and renamed him "Chocolate". Chocolate loved to go for his walks and play with his toys. The dog park was his favorite activity. He enjoyed running and playing with all dogs of all sizes.

Sadly, Chocolate's life ended way too soon due to complications from Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). Rest in peace, little guy.

Harrison
"Harry"

Adopted 10/15/01
Deceased 03/14/10

From Charlotte, Harrison's adopter (3/18/10): It is with a very sad heart and a HUGE empty spot in my world that I write this. "Harry" (Harrison) the longhaired Dachsie with the lobster claw foot, who I adopted from DROH in October 2001, left me on Sunday to go live with Jesus. Words cannot express what delight he brought to my world and my mom's world. Even my sister loved Harry, and she is not a dog person. Everyone who met Harry loved him and he loved them back. He made regular visits with me to the Humane Society of Southeast Texas (where I am a regular volunteer) and was loved by all. If I didn't bring him, I was questioned as to why he was not with me. I took him with me to many a shelter function, sort of as a mascot. He had the sweetest spirit and my sister repeatedly said "Harry is a HAPPY DOG". Much like a person who is handiCAPABLE, Harry didn't know he was "different" and it made him all that more special.

Lucky #2
"Izzy"

Adopted 03/09/08
Deceased 02/09/10

Lucky lived up to her name. Abandoned at the vet by her previous family, she was fortunate enough to find people who were not afraid to adopt a Dachshund who was getting up in years. And although they only had two short years with her, it was well worth it for all involved. Thanks to Shannon and Crystal for taking such good care of this sweet girl in her golden years.

Keira
"Gracie"

Adopted 04/14/07
Deceased 12/15/09

This sweet little girl came to us weighing barely over 6 lbs. She couldn't eat solid food because her teeth were in such bad shape, and she had to be treated for heartworms. She was adopted in April of 2007, but passed away in December of 2009, probably due to hard life she had endured before she was rescued. Thanks to Leslie for showing her what it's like to be loved.

You can see more pictures of my adopted brother, George (Scotch), here.

Bella

Adopted 04/04/00
Deceased 11/15/08

Bella was a sweet black and tan and our very first rescue. We adopted her in April 2000. She was found by a lady walking her dog in the woods. Bella had been left to die, had no hair due to thyroid problem, and was very sick. She was surrendered to the rescue group and she recovered. It took a while to get her trust us, this poor girl had never received love and attention and would tense up when touched. With time and patience and she became the queen of the house. She was a character and had quite an attitude; she bossed the other dogs around. One of the things she liked to do was to flip her bed over and sit on top of it. During a routing dental it was discovered she had a tumor in the soft palate. Her age was estimated to be 15 and she passed in November 2008. We miss her attitude and her quirky ways!
Number of dogs: 21
