Heartbreak Hounds

Foster Dog Memorial

I shall seek out the injured and the maimed,
the unloved and the abandoned,
and tend to them in their last days.

I shall renew their spirits when they are waning,
bind their wounds when they bleed,
cradle them when they whimper,
and comfort them when they mourn.

I shall be near them in their hour of greatest need -
a companion and friend when the time has come.

I shall watch over them and console them
and ask that the Angels gather them in their arms.

From A Rescuer's Creed, by Susan M. Pearson

Angel Rescue Story

Nicole Kidman

Deceased 12/30/11

We did all we could to save this precious baby girl. She was diagnosed with a liver shunt and kidney failure. At least we rescued her in time for her to rest comfortably for a while. Rest in peace, little angel.

Shari

Deceased 12/15/11

Shari went to Rainbow Bridge today. Unfortunately, this sweet baby was exposed to Distemper before she was vaccinated.

A Tribute to Shari & her Mistress
By Lea Miller

Sometimes our time is brief.
Although we never intend it for grief
A special person is chosen with care,
'Cause it takes someone special, for a burden to bear.

There is a role, reserved for only a few.
First the Heart has to be tested and found to be true.
'Cause when a Heart is so big and wide,
Somehow the tears swell and overflow outside.

Lots of cleaning is needed and required,
To mop up the tears, can make one tired.
Really only one question is asked.
Can you take one of my little creatures, and in your love, let it bask?

Not much is asked, from the Master Above.
Just watch over my special ones with Love.
He watches from way high above,
Looking for someone, He can trust with love.

He spotted you, my friend.
Surely He smiled, when He knew,
To you, Shari, He could send.
A mistress, loyal and true.

Eleanor Billington

Deceased 12/13/11

We lost sweet little Ellie today. She was diagnosed with Myelomalacia, a lethal disease in which the nerve cord starts to die. It usually happens within 10 days following a severe disc herniation. There is no known cure.

From Mary: Today was the kind of day you wish never would happen. I only had this precious little one with me for the drive up to A & M, and yet her diagnosis and prognosis were devastating. Such a darling little girl.

From Julie: Ellie was a very sweet girl who loved to cuddle and give kisses and chase dogs five times her size around. Something like this is always hard on everyone but at least we did the best we could by her. Tried everything and ended her suffering when it was needed. We know that she had a good and happy life for the time that DRoH had her.

From Marcie: Just such devastating news, very sad. My daughter and I transported her down to her foster, and she kept asking me, "Why can't WE foster Eleanor??!!". A spunky, happy girl, just as cute as they come.

Becky Thatcher
"Becky Boo"

Deceased 10/17/11

Sweet Becky lost her battle with liver disease today. She had been doing extremely well, but took a sudden downturn last week. She brought much joy to her foster family in the short time she was with us. We hope, in the end, she knew how much she was loved.

Chesterina

Deceased 05/23/11

Chesterina could not recover from the neurological damage caused by distemper.

Dr. Bombay
"Bud"

Deceased 05/23/11

It is with heavy heart and great sadness I wish to inform you all that Dr. Bombay aka "Bud" went to the Rainbow Bridge today, May 23, 2011, at 4:10 p.m. He had congestive heart failure in the right chamber of his little heart and we were told by all three veterinarians who examined him that it was more than likely caused by the heartworms and subsequent heartworm treatment he received, especially since he was infected and treated during his senior years. He put up a tough battle but loss of appetite from all the medication, dehydration, and complications from loss of circulation were all more than his little body could bear.

He passed very peacefully here at home in Montgomery while surrounded by his family. He will be laid to rest in a small pet coffin with a brief graveside service here at his home on the ranch today at sunset.

There are no words to express the mutual love felt for and by "Bud" from the moment Tom and I picked him up from his previous foster and took him to the emergency room in The Woodlands last November, 2010. He became instant family. He will be greatly missed - he was definitely "one of kind"!

To DROH, "Thank you" for the opportunity to share "Bud's" last six months with him. It was priceless for all.

May the little man now "Rest In Peace"! We know he will be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge where we will one day meet up with him again!

Delta

Deceased 05/19/11

Delta was hit by a car. We made the painful decision to let her go to over the rainbow bridge to release her from her pain and injuries.

Penny #3

Deceased 05/08/11

Penny, or as we affectionately called her "Momma" died in her sleep on Sunday. We think she was around 17 (came into DROH with severe mammary cancer and bad teeth seven years ago) and had survived the cancer and many years of heart problems. It was a shock and I miss her bunches, but I am grateful she died peacefully snuggled under the covers on our bed and not in Harris County Animal Control where she was rescued from. the seniors really are the best! May her little soul rest in peace....

Lizzie

Deceased 05/02/11

We lost sweet Lizzie to distemper.

Sprite
"Isabella (Izzy)"

Deceased 04/18/11

Isabella had a hard life from the beginning. As her foster Mom, I felt she had been in a cage most of her life as she became very sad when crated. When she came to me, it took her a few days to realize that she, too, had a bed of her own – and one that was out in the open and had no bars! Once she figured it out, she loved knowing it was there (though she occasionally butted up next to one of her brothers instead). Izzy enjoyed eating and foraged through the yard for anything she thought would taste good, another sign of having to fight for her food during her lifetime. She didn’t feel deserving of good things so we made sure to include her in everything – even sleeping in the big bed. With no warning, she became very ill one evening. She was in my lap for several hours and I was hoping the worst was behind us as she seemed to be resting. Still feeling uneasy, I decided to sleep on the floor with her to be able to check on her throughout the night. I would talk with her and pet her as she looked at me with love in her eyes. She died peacefully in her sleep around 4 AM. Heartworms were the culprit and the end of a difficult journey for our little Izzy. Thoughts of her will remain with me for the rest of my life. Her barking when I was preparing her breakfast or dinner still rings in my ears. I cry for her at the drop of a hat but know that in Heaven she, again, has no bars around her and is so very loved. One little pill each month and she would still be here today.

Grumpy
"Little Bit"

Deceased 04/01/11

Little Bit, formerly "Grumpy", arrived in rescue when she was only four months old. She had an extremely dominant personality and was very protective of her foster mom. Most people would have given up on this little girl, but her foster mom loved her enough to put up with her sometimes naughty behavior. As difficult as she could be, her foster mom still misses her very much.

Clancy

Deceased 03/28/11

Clancy was found on St. Patrick’s day, hence his Irish name with means “red headed fighter”. Unfortunately, even with his fighting spirit, he was not strong enough to conquer Parvo, a deadly disease which could have been easily prevented by vaccination.

Dash

Deceased 03/26/11

From his Foster Mom: Dash Dox-What can I say?

He came to me malnourished with scars from his previous short life, but it never dampened his spirit.

I worried about his difficulties with his heartworm treatment. I will never know if he was going to beat those odds.

He died doing what he loved best: chasing squirrels. He spent his daylight hours looking in the trees for any creature that moved.

He was the best escape artist of any fence if he thought there was a squirrel on the other side. Dash was definitely an appropriate name.

On his last day he managed to squeeze through a gate on an above-ground pool and drowned while chasing, yes, another squirrel.

I believe he is still chasing them in heaven.

Cassidy

Deceased 02/18/11

We lost poor Cassidy to heartworms.

Snickers

Deceased 02/12/11

Poor Snickers was in extreme heart failure from heartworms when we got him. PLEASE give your dogs their heartworm medication!

Gretel

Deceased 02/04/11

Poor Gretel's heart could not stand up to heartworm treatment and she died from complications. Her heart completely failed.

Cici

Deceased 12/31/10

Cici was lovingly fostered for only one week before she succumbed to pneumonia. This frightened little lady experienced a week of love and kindness unknown in her past life.

Lula #2

Deceased 12/15/10

Poor Lula came in contact with Parvo before she was rescued, and we weren't able to save her. This is why it's so important to vaccinate your pets.

Rusty #3

Deceased 12/08/10

From Anne Marie, Rusty's foster mom (12/8/10): We had to let him go today. He had been feeling a LOT better lately, but the vet said sometimes that happens. I knew that could be the case. We were with him until the very end and able to hug him, kiss him and sing to him.

I'm glad he had some days where he felt better as we got to take some gentle long walks and have lots of cuddle time. I feel okay with the way everything turned out. My son was there, so we prayed and hugged each other and believe it or not, we were able to be very peaceful and calm. It hurts of course, sometimes really badly, but I pray and talk to people and we'll be okay. We've been preparing for this ever since he started getting sick a few weeks back.

Rusty was a senior "forever foster". Thanks, Anne Marie, for loving and taking such good care of him during his golden years.

Jinx

Deceased 11/17/10

Jinx was a young stray whose owners never came to get her from the shelter. Unfortunately they must not have vaccinated her because she came down with Distemper after she was rescued by DRoH. Not only did she suffer needlessly, but her foster mom is heartbroken over losing her. Please say a little prayer for all the unvaccinated pets out there.

Casper

Deceased 11/04/10

Casper was attacked at a local shelter and was rescued by DRoH. Casper had Cushings disease, Diabetes, and came down with a bad cough. We decided not to let him suffer anymore.

Edgar

Deceased 07/30/10

Poor Edgar died due to complications from Heartworms. All it takes is a montly pill to prevent this deadly disease.

Rosie

Deceased 04/28/10

Rosie was a purebred Dachsie with papers, surrendered to a shelter by her owners. Rosie's transporter said she was so scared. She didn't understand what was happening to her, but she walked well on a leash with a kind of dignity about her that was very endearing.

Rosie went over the Rainbow bridge due to Distemper, apparently not vaccinated against this awful disease.

Frank

Deceased 04/20/10

Frank was dumped at a kill shelter by his owners because he "barked too much". His transporter for DRoH said he did not make a peep on the way to the vet.

Frank suffered from Distemper and, sadly, we had to make the difficult decision to euthanize him.

Isaiah

Deceased 04/20/10

My name is Isaiah and my selfish owners did not want to put out the effort to give me one small pill a month to prevent heartworms. When I came down with heartworms they dumped me at a shelter and told the shelter to put me down, they did not want to deal with it. Thank goodness the shelter cared and called DRoH. DRoH did all they could, but alas, the heartworms won.

Dave

Deceased 02/17/10

Dave, one of our "Alvin and the Chipmunks" rescues, sadly crossed over the Rainbow Bridge due to Distemper. Poor Dave, loved by all at the the vet clinic where he was being treated, never even had a chance to go to a foster. Please vaccinate your companion animals.

Ziggy #2

Deceased 01/18/10

Ziggy was not able to overcome his heartworm disease and his little heart failed him. He crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on January 18th.

Travis

Deceased 01/07/10

Travis had a broken tibia and needed surgery. He also tested positive for heartworms. If we had not taken him he would have been put down immediately. Unfortunately, after going through surgery to repair his leg, he developed Distemper and went over the Rainbow Bridge January 7th.

Randy

Deceased 10/31/09

Randy was an older guy who lived out his golden years with his fosters.

Sweet Randy went to the Rainbow Bridge on October 31st.

Quinn

Deceased 07/02/08

Unfortunately Quinn did not make it through heartworm treatment. This sweet boy went to the Rainbow Bridge on July 2nd.

Lexie

Deceased 06/18/08

Poor Mickey Mouse went to Rainbow Bridge on April 9th.

Jamie went to the Rainbow Bridge on Feb 20th. Rest in Peace, poor baby.

Poor Arty was euthanized on September 5th due to complications from heartworm treatment.

Levi

Deceased 08/10/07

Levi's vet recommended euthanizing him on August 10th due to late stage heartworms. Poor Levi.

Max

Deceased 03/02/07

Max was another victim of owner neglect. DRoH rescued him on February 27th and he passed away March 2nd. He was young and cute and would have made someone a wonderful pet, but never got a chance.

Unfortunately, Annie had a lymphoma that went untreated for too long. By the time we resuced her, she was already too sick to save.

We picked up Bogart with a report that he had been hit by a car, unfortunately, he was down with no hope of being helped by surgery. Bogart can now run and jump over the Rainbow Bridge.

Carbon

Deceased //

Poor Carbon's little heart gave out during heartworm treatment. We tried everything to save him, but he was just too neglected in a previous life. May he rest in peace and run with the Dachshund Rescue on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

Clover was found wandering the streets after being attacked by dogs. He was a sweet, sweet boy and just need some TLC.

Unfortunately, he contracted Distemper while at the shelter and went to the Rainbow Bridge.

Cooper

Deceased //

Davie

Deceased //

Due to the neglect of my previous owners, I was euthanized at the young age of two due to complications from heartworm disease. Please make sure this doesn't happen to your pet by providing consistent monthly heartworm prevention.

Evan

Deceased //

Evan did not receive proper medical care before coming to DRoH and contracted Distemper. He died because he was not properly vaccinated by his previous owners and we were unable to save him despite our best efforts. Rest in peace sweet soul.

Jimmy was probably 10 years old when we got him, as you can tell by his white muzzle. We saved him from being put down by a shelter before the hurricane. Jimmy found a kind family who kept him until his final days.

Sara Anne

Deceased //

Sara was a sweet mini red female with severe Demodex mange and almost no hair on her body when we rescued her. She was about two years old and was picked up as a stray. A lot of her hair grew back after we treated her, but the mange flared up again. After several months with hair, she suddenly has took a severe turn for the worse. Her hair fell out again and she developed boils all over her body. She was diagnosed with Pemphigus, a rare skin disorder. After months of holistic and standard veterinarian care, we came to accept that Sara Ann would probably not get better. Her Pemphigus continued to come and go with no rhyme or reason. Poor Sara eventually succumbed to the disease.

Sully

Deceased //

Sweet, sweet Sully (many of you might remember him from the dog show) was diagnosed with cancer.

Timmy

Deceased //

Timmy got his name because he was so timid. He was too skinny to neuter right away and needed to be treated for heartworms. Poor Timmy's heart gave out from the heartworms before he could be treated. He received tons of love from his foster family, and now he's playing in the fields on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.
