Dear DRoH,
We wanted to let you know that today we are celebrating one year since we brought our precious Nellie home.
We could not have imagined what a blessing she is to us. We love her more every day. She's doing great! Thank you and DRoH and God Bless you.

Dear DRoH,
We adopted Angelina Jolie ("Daisy") in January and we figured we'd pass along a quick update.
Daisy has finished her heartworm treatment, and as of two weeks ago, is heartworm free.
Daisy is the sweetest little dog we could've ever imagined.
She loves to snuggle and play at all times. She is the easiest Dachshund I have ever had regarding house training.
She absolutely loves her Dachshund brother, Clinton, although Clinton sometimes does get annoyed with his little sis.
She has much more energy. She loves biking, kayaking, and boating right along with us.
We are working hard on building her confidence.
She is still nervous around new people and has been nippy on ocassion. She is working hard at it and is improving everyday.
We have enjoyed her so much, and Clinton is no doubt a happier dog with her around. We would like to thank y'all again for being so great throughout
the process. Allowing us to foster her during her treatment was great, and I do beleive it helped her build a bond with us.
We look forward to making it out to some events this summer especially, the Wild West Wienerfest races.
We have a couple fast ones. Thanks again for everything. Keep up the great work!
Sincerely,
Kevin and Cassie

Dear DRoH,
I'd like to make this donation in memory of our English Bulldog, Madison, and his little brother, Winston, the Dachshund.
Madison crossed Rainbow Bridge on December 27th after 14 years and 7 months, due to old age.
His little brother, Winston the weenie, crossed before him in 2008 of a stomach cancer at 10 years of age.
We really miss them.
We've been to two of the DRoH fund raisers and admire what DRoH does for the dogs. God bless all of you.

Dear DRoH,
Spring must be in the air as Lilliana is feeling like a teenager. She has aged me terribly this week.
She has become obsessed with the coffee table... well with the idea that there must be food on the coffee table.
She started the week by climbing up the table. Somehow she got her front paws on top of the table,
moved all the way in until her chest touched the side of the table and swung her back paws underneath the top of the table.
From that position, she used her back legs to push against the underside of the table while lunging the front part of her body
forward and scrambling on top of the table. This all happen in a matter of a seconds.
I could not believe (1) that she had the strength
to do that and (2) that she didn't tear a muscle or worse. She was removed from the coffee table.
Her next attempt
was to take a leap from the top of the doggy stairs (for the dog to get on the couch, not the coffee table). She missed.
Her front paws hit the edge of the table, she bounced back hitting the stairs with her back and then bounced off the stairs with her face
and front paws hitting the bottom level of the table. I leapt from my chair to get Lilliana, almost coming full weight down on Comet's back.
Lilliana was okay and didn't want any cuddling. She was heading back up the stairs for the next attempt.
I moved the coffee table three feet further away from the couch and stairs. Unfortunately this moved the coffee table closer to the tray table.
Next thing I notice is Lilliana standing tippy toe on the edge of the tray stretching to reach the coffee table and pull herself up.
Lilliana was removed from the tray table and it was moved two more feet away from the coffee table. This furniture arrangement,
while not practical for me, seems to be keeping Lilliana from attempting to get on the coffee table.
Since she can no longer age me by attempting to
get on the table, she decided to stress me out this morning by eating a dead gecko. We were at the half way point in our morning walk when I looked down
and saw something sticking out of Lilliana's mouth. I crouched down to get a better look. I saw the tummy, back legs and tail of a gecko.
I started screaming at Lilliana to drop it. She takes a gulp. Now I just see legs and tail. While still screaming, I am trying to pry open Lilliana's mouth.
For an 8 lb dog with no upper teeth, she has amazing jaw strength. Somehow she gets another gulp in and no more gecko.
Then came the sprint for home.
I'm sure it must have been a sight to see a middle-aged, overweight woman carrying a dachshund
and yelling at a chihuahua to run. I had to run 8 blocks. Got into the house and quickly called the vet, only to be told it was no biggy.
Apparently geckos are not toxic and Lilliana didn't need to get her stomach pumped. I just have to watch her for an upset tummy (so far so good) and possible tape worms.
I am plotting my revenge - I heard that Rover Oaks is having Easter photos. Lilliana will be mugging it with a big bunny.

Dear DRoH,
May this donation go to help some of Schatzie's little friends. Thanks for the wonderful job that you, the volunteers, do to help the dachshunds.
My adoption of Schatzie has probably been one of the most successful adoptions of DRoH. I can't imagine not having this sweet, spoiled rotten, little dog. She
has always been by my side, but since my husband passed away she is more like glued to me. I think I may change her name to Shadow.

Dear DRoH,
Last year we sent you a contribution in memory of our Maggie - she had passed on
December 3rd. She was our 5th Dachshund in a long, continuous string of them (l got my
first in 1977) and the last of a "gang of 3". In May, we opened our hearts to a little fellow
from the Humane Society we saw on Channel 2. We've named him Frosty due to his
frosted hairdo. He'd come with the name of Benny but that made
Mom think of a cigar-smoking beer-drinking guy with 2 days of stubble and in a stained
t-shirt. Dad thought Mom was crazy! We think he's about a year and a half old now
and he has brought tremendous joy back into our lives. Keep up the good work with all these sweeties

Dear DRoH,
Emma and I will celebrate 4 months together on new year's. She and I have learned a lot about each other.
I've learned that no mater what circumstances a dog was under when she was growing up, she still wants to please us.
Emma has come a long way these months. She's becoming more dog-like every day.
She's less timid now and is learning than it's ok to explore new surroundings.
Anyway, she's looking at me, hinting that I haven't played with her in over 15 minutes.
I hope everyone at DRoH has a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Dear DRoH,
Don't know if you remember me. I am the pilot who brought Cinnamon in last year.
I am in the process of trying to raise funds to further my flying ability to do more rescue flights in the next year.
I have setup a
Fundraising Site
which links to your site as well as Pilots N Paws.
I would like to know if it would be possible to
have you place a link to my site on your page also.
Thanks for your consideration, and please let me
know if I can help during the coming year.

Dear DRoH,
Enclosed is a donation to DRoH. It is a small token of our family's appreciation for all that you do.
You brought us Paris in July 2009. We renamed her "Princess". She is royalty in our home (and she knows it).
We can never thank you enough. I hope that this token of appreciation goes out to bring someone else (or their family) the joy and happiness
these dogs bring.
Sincerely,
Raymond and Family

Dear DRoH,
I adopted Ziggy (now named Remington) in November of 2009 so we will be celebrating two years together very soon!
He is such a joy! He is spoiled by everyone who knows him. My mom even bought herself a magnet that says "I love my grand-dog".
Remington recently went to Dog Day at Minute Maid Park. He is a definite Astros fan as he just sat in my lap the whole time and
wached the game! He even got to meet Junction Jack. Thanks for all you do for dachshunds!

Dear DRoH,
Clark wants you all to know he's doing great! He's filled out nicely and has beautiful red coat.
It's a little colder here in Dallas so he is often sporting a cozy sweater. Clark, Molly, and Jill
send you many thanks and a little something for the Sable and Dolly Challenge.

Dear DRoH,
One of my early adoptees, Elaine (before DRoH), ingested sugarless gum while snooping in a friend's purse.
It was several hours later that we realized Elaine had eaten an entire package of Stride gum. Thankfully, my friend remembered
hearing about toxicity from artificial sweeteners found in gum and other diet products.
I called the 800 number for Veterinary Poison Control and they confirmed that the
Xylitol
sweetener Elaine had ingested is extremely
poisonous to dogs. Only a very small amount is needed to cause death. Elaine had exceeded that threshold and was in a
critical situation. It was evening, of course, so this meant an emergency visit. They kept her overnight where her vital signs
worsened steadily.
This horrible chemical causes kidney failure and liver death if not treated aggressively. This long story ends
happily for Elaine and her family but involved four scary days of hospitalization and dialysis.
They said we were very lucky that Elaine survived and with only minimal liver damage. The veterinarian and staff
told us that many pets die or arrive at the clinic near death without the owner ever knowing what caused the illness.
This is chilling to me because so much is made of chocolate and other "lesser poisons" and little is heard about
Xylitol.
The devastating story about Sago Palm on your website prompted me to write our horror story.
Thanks for all you do for our beloved dachsies!

Dear DRoH,
I am writing this letter to point out the DANGER of SAGO PALMS. Last month we lost our precious
little dachshund, Gabbie, whom we adopted 6 years ago from a rescue in Dallas. She was our best friend and such an integral part
of our life every moment. We moved into an older home that had sagos, which I do not like the looks of,
so we were going to remove when we had some money for landscaping, but did not know how lethal they are or that they were even
slightly poisonous, or we would have made it our first priority.
Without us knowing (we had put her with our other dogs outside
while an alarm system was being installed) Gabbie chewed a small portion of a sago. At the emergency vet, after running all of the tests and finally figuring out what had happened,
there was nothing they could do.
The immense guilt I feel over this cannot be expressed.
I am an avid gardener and at our last house picked all of the plants and researched them. My lawn and gardens
are organic, because of the effects of the chemicals on pets and children. I did not think twice about the "palm tree", which is
actually a cycad that is present in over 75% of the yards in most neighborhoods.
We immediately had the trees removed including
the roots because every part of the plant is toxic.
Our vet has told us just about every week they get pets in who have eaten
this (they have only a 12% chance of survival if you catch it immediately). Some owners have had them
removed but left the stump, which later killed their dogs; others have found pieces brought in by squirrels that their dogs have
eaten. We no longer let our dogs in the back yard without supervision.
I am passing this along because we have run into people who are not aware of the dangers of sago palms and have
them in their yards. We do not want anyone else to suffer a family loss like this.
